Money Matching Pack

  • Pocket Change spin and cover game mat and spinner
  • Pocket Change spin and graph page: “How many?” for each coin

Kids spin a coin, then cover or graph the matching picture. The pages work alone or as a game for two players.

Required Materials:

  • Paper, printer and ink
  • Laminator
  • Paper clip and pencil for the spinner
  • Crayons, markers or colored pencils
  • Real coins or counters

Standards for Coins and Graphing

These activities support early math standards connected to identifying coins and organizing data.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.C.4: Organize, represent and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category and how many more or less are in one category than in another. Kids graph each coin they spin and compare the columns.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, using $ and cent symbols appropriately. Kids name each coin and its value.

TEKS for Mathematics

  • TEKS 1.4(A): Identify U.S. coins, including pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, by value and describe the relationships among them. Kids name each coin they spin.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.NS.4.a: Identify a quarter and its value and determine multiple ways to represent the value of a quarter using pennies, nickels and/or dimes. Kids name each coin and its value.

Money Matching Pack gives kindergarten, first and second grade kids two quick games for identifying pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Kids spin the Pocket Change spinner, name the coin and cover it on the game mat. On the graph page, they color one box for each coin they spin until one column reaches the top.

Set out real coins so kids can compare the size and color of each coin as they play.

How to Use Money Matching Pack

  1. Print and laminate the game mat, spinner and graph page.
  2. Put a paper clip and pencil on the spinner.
  3. Kids spin and name the coin.
  4. Spin and cover: cover the matching coin on the mat.
  5. Spin and graph: color a box for that coin and count the columns at the end.

Partner Game: Take turns spinning and covering.

Small Group: Sort real coins before you play.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Coin Games

Every group has a mix of coin and counting skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Use real coins next to the mat.
  • Start with pennies and nickels.
  • Name each coin together.
  • Hold the spinner for the child.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Play both games.
  • Name each coin and its value.
  • Count each column on the graph.
  • Tell which coin won.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Find the total value of your covered coins.
  • Tell how many more one coin has than another.
  • Trade coins for equal values.
  • Write the value of each coin.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Talk through each step together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use real coins to feel the size and edges.
  • Use a coin chart with values.
