Standards for Counting and Matching Numbers
These number matching mats support early math standards connected to counting sets and matching amounts to numerals.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. Kids count items on each rainbow and match the amount to a number.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array or a circle. Kids count the items on each rainbow to check their work.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics
- PK4.V.A.2: Child counts up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence. Kids touch and count each object.
- PK4.V.A.3: Child counts up to 10 items and demonstrates cardinality by communicating that the last number indicates how many items are in the set. Kids say how many after counting.
- TEKS K.2(B): Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures. Kids show each number with objects.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to determine how many are in a given set. Kids count each set one object at a time.
Rainbow Number Matching Mats give preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on practice counting sets and matching each amount to its number from 0 to 20.
Each rainbow card shows an amount to count. Kids count it and match the right number card, number magnet or number tile.
Start with numbers 0-10 and move to 11-20 when kids are ready. Kids can also write the number on each card with a dry erase marker.
How to Use Rainbow Number Matching Mats 0-20
- Print, laminate and cut apart the rainbow cards and number cards.
- Kids pick a rainbow and count the amount.
- Kids find the matching number card and place it on the rainbow.
- Check by counting again.
Small Group: Count each rainbow together and point to each dot.
Math Center: Set out the cards for independent matching.
Easy Ways to Differentiate These Matching Mats
Every group has a mix of counting skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
