Standards for Counting Coins

These clip cards support math standards connected to identifying coins and finding the value of a set of coins.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, using $ and cent symbols appropriately. Kids count the value of the coins on each card.

TEKS for Mathematics

  • TEKS 1.4(A): Identify U.S. coins, including pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, by value and describe the relationships among them. Kids name each coin and its value.
  • TEKS 2.5(A): Determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar. Kids find the total on each card.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.NS.4.b: Count by ones, fives, tens and twenty-fives to determine the value of a collection of mixed coins whose total value is $2.00 or less. Kids count the coins on each card.

Counting Coins: Clip Cards give first and second grade kids hands-on practice naming coins and counting small coin collections.

Each card shows a set of coins, from a single penny to a mix of nickels, dimes and pennies. Kids count the value and clip the right answer.

The cards start with one coin and build to mixed sets up to 20 cents. Mark the backs for self-checking.
