🎯 Learning Standards Addressed:

Common Core ELA Standards:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.6: Acquire and use grade-appropriate academic vocabulary
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases

Texas TEKS (Geography):

  • 113.12.3.C: Identify and describe physical features of places such as landforms, bodies of water, and climate

Virginia SOL (Geography):

  • 113.12.3.C: Identify and describe physical features of places such as landforms, bodies of water, and climate

How to Use:

  1. Prep the Cards: Print the cards on cardstock or the back of one-sided scrapbook paper to prevent “see-through” peeking. Laminate for durability so you can use them year after year.
  2. Choose the Center Pile Format: Select any of the three card formats for your CENTER pile. For the best learning impact, choose the format your students struggle with the most... this way, they’ll get extra practice while matching to more familiar formats in their PLAYING piles.
  3. Set Up the Game: Place the CENTER cards face down in a pile in the middle of the table.
Deal the PLAYING cards equally among all players. Each player keeps their stack face down in front of them.
  4. Start the Round: Flip over the top CENTER card. Players take turns, in clockwise order, flipping over the top card from their own stack into the discard pile.
  5. Make a Match: If a PLAYING card matches the CENTER card (matches can be in a different format—example: a picture of a basin matches a definition card), the first player to slap it wins the round! The winning player takes the entire discard pile and adds it to the bottom of their own stack.
  6. Keep the Game Moving: After a match, flip a new CENTER card and keep playing until time runs out or one player has collected all of the PLAYING cards.

Variation Ideas:

  • Beginner-Friendly Play: Start with only two formats (for example, pictures and names) by printing extra copies of those cards. As students master them, introduce the third format for an added challenge.
  • Progressive Vocabulary: Begin with the most familiar landforms and add new ones as they are introduced in class.
  • Memory Match: Print one copy each of two formats and play traditional Memory.
  • Go Fish: Print two copies each of two formats and play Go Fish for a quieter, small-group vocabulary review.

This Landforms Slap It! Card Game is a perfect blend of academic learning and active fun, making it an essential addition to your social studies or geography curriculum.
