Standards for Expanded Form and Place Value

This game supports place value standards connected to writing four-digit numbers in standard form and expanded form.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.A.2: Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using the greater than, equal to and less than symbols to record the results of comparisons. Kids write each spun number in expanded form and standard form.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.3: Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names and expanded form. Kids start with three-digit numbers.

TEKS for Mathematics

  • TEKS 3.2(A): Compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 as a sum of so many ten thousands, so many thousands, so many hundreds, so many tens and so many ones using objects, pictorial models and numbers, including expanded notation as appropriate. Kids build each number from the four spinners.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.NS.2.b: Read, write and represent three-digit numbers in standard form, expanded form and word form, using concrete or pictorial representations. Kids write each number in expanded form and standard form.

Spin & Win File Folder Game: Expanded Form Thousands gives second and third grade kids a game for building and writing four-digit numbers in expanded form.

Kids spin the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones spinners, write the expanded form on their write and wipe board and find the standard form. Then they move along the game board to the end.

The recording sheet lets kids keep track of 10 numbers they spin, which works well as a check at the end of a math center.

How to Use Spin & Win File Folder Game: Expanded Form Thousands
