Standards for Counting and Cardinality
These LEGO brick cards support early math standards connected to counting objects, one-to-one correspondence, matching numbers to amounts and recognizing numerals to 12.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Every card connects a numeral and number word with a tower of bricks.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things. Kids count the bricks on each card and in their own tower.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics
- TEKS K.2A: Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects. Kids count up as they work through the cards in order.
- TEKS K.2B: Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures. Kids read the numeral, trace the number word and build the matching amount.
- TEKS K.2C: Count a set of objects up to at least 20 and show that the last number said tells how many are in the set. Kids count every brick in the tower to find how many.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set. Kids count one brick at a time as they build.
- K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects to match a given numeral. Kids build a tower with the same number of bricks as the card.
LEGO Brick Counting Cards 1-12 help preschool and kindergarten kids count objects, build numbers and recognize numbers 1-12 with a hands-on printable math activity.
Build a tower! Each card shows a stack of colorful bricks. Kids build a matching tower with real bricks, count it and trace the number.
Every card from 1 to 12 shows a brick tower to count, with the number and number word ready to trace. Kids snap together the same number of bricks, set their tower next to the picture and count to check.
Building with bricks turns counting into a hands-on challenge and builds fine motor strength at the same time.
Laminate the cards and they’re ready for building, counting and tracing again and again.
How to Use LEGO Brick Counting Cards 1-12
- Choose a card and count the bricks in the tower.
- Build a matching tower with real bricks and count it again.
- Trace the number and number word with a dry-erase marker.
Small Group: Give each child a card and a pile of bricks. Everyone builds their tower and shares how many with the group. Pass the cards to the left and play again.
Independent Practice: Set the cards in a math or building center with a bin of bricks and a dry-erase marker. Kids work through the numbers in order or pick any card to build, count and trace.
Easy Ways to Differentiate These Counting Cards
Every group of kids has a mix of counting, number recognition and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Start with numbers 1-5 and add more cards as counting becomes steady.
- Count each brick in the picture together before building.
- Lay the real tower right on top of the picture to match.
- Trace the number with a finger before using a marker.
For On-Level Practice:
- Use the cards for 1-10 in order.
- Have kids say the number after building.
- Build the tower, then trace the number and word.
- Have a partner count the bricks to check the work.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Use all 12 cards and put them in order.
- Pull two cards and have kids tell which tower is taller.
- Build one more or one less than the card shows.
- Line up the towers from shortest to tallest.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Model the number word and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Use larger bricks for kids who are still building hand strength.
- Repeat the same small set of numbers across several sessions.
- Name the brick colors together for extra language practice.
