Standards for Counting and Cardinality
These dog clip cards support early math standards connected to counting objects, one-to-one correspondence, matching numbers to amounts and recognizing numerals to 20.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Every card connects a set of pictures with a numeral.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things. Kids count the pictures on each ten-frame card.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.NBT.A.1: Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones. The teen cards show each number as one full ten-frame plus some more.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics
- TEKS K.2A: Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects. Kids count up as they work through the cards in order.
- TEKS K.2B: Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures. Kids match each amount on the ten-frame to its numeral.
- TEKS K.2C: Count a set of objects up to at least 20 and show that the last number said tells how many are in the set. Kids count every picture to find how many, then clip the matching number.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set. Kids touch each picture once as they count.
- K.NS.1.c: Show counting by ones with tools like ten-frames. Kids count each picture in the ten-frame, one box at a time.
- K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects to match a given numeral. Kids build the same amount with counters to check a card.
Dog Ten-Frame Clip Cards 0-20 help preschool and kindergarten kids count to 20, recognize amounts on a ten-frame and match numbers to quantities with a hands-on printable math activity.
Clip the right number! Each card shows a ten-frame filled with puppy paw prints and three numbers at the bottom. Kids count the paws and clip a clothespin on the one that matches.
There are 21 cards in all, one for every number from 0 to 20. Kids count the paw prints on the ten-frame and clip the matching number from three choices. Cards for 11-20 use a double ten-frame so kids can see each teen number as one full ten and some more.
Squeezing a clothespin builds hand strength for writing. Add a small dot on the back of each card behind the correct answer and the cards become self-checking.
Looking for more puppy counting? The dog ten-frame cards use the same ten-frames for flash cards and matching games.
The black paw prints print clearly on any printer. Laminate the cards so they hold up to clipping again and again.
How to Use Dog Ten-Frame Clip Cards 0-20
- Choose a card and count the pictures in the ten-frame.
- Find the matching number in the three choices.
- Clip a clothespin on that number, then flip the card to check the dot on the back.
Small Group: Give each child a few cards and a clothespin. Everyone counts, clips and shows a partner before trading cards.
Independent Practice: Set the cards in a math center or morning tub with a cup of clothespins. Kids work through the cards and flip each one to check their answer.
Easy Ways to Differentiate These Clip Cards
Every group of kids has a mix of counting, number recognition and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Start with cards 0-5 and add more as counting becomes steady.
- Touch and count each picture in the ten-frame together.
- Point out that a full row is five before counting on.
- Use a paper clip or a dot sticker if a clothespin is hard to squeeze.
For On-Level Practice:
- Work through the cards for 0-10.
- Have kids say the number after clipping.
- Have kids build the same amount on a blank ten-frame with counters.
- Flip each card to self-check.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Mix in the teen cards and work through all 21.
- Ask how many more it would take to fill the ten-frame and make 10 or 20.
- Time how fast kids can clip a set of cards correctly.
- Put the cards in order from 0 to 20 after clipping.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Model the number word and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Use a clothespin for built-in fine motor practice. Switch to a paper clip for kids still building hand strength.
- Repeat the same small set of numbers across several sessions.
- Talk about paws, puppies and pets for extra vocabulary practice.
