Sorting and Classifying Mats: LEGO Theme

  • LEGO® Venn diagram mats (blank and with labels like squares and red)
  • LEGO® classification mats with a rule to fill in (sort by color or size)

Kids sort LEGO® bricks onto the mats by color, size or both.

Required Materials:

  • Laminator (optional)
  • LEGO® bricks

Standards for Sorting and Classifying

These mats support math standards connected to sorting and classifying by attributes.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3: Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Kids sort LEGO® bricks by color or size.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines

  • PK4.V.E.1: Child sorts objects that are the same and different into groups and uses language to describe how the groups are similar and different. Kids sort LEGO® bricks by color or size.

Virginia Standards of Learning

  • Math K.PS.1.a: Sort and classify concrete objects into appropriate subsets (categories) based on one attribute. Kids sort LEGO® bricks by color or size.
  • Math K.PS.1.b: Describe and label attributes of a set of objects that has been sorted. Kids tell how each group is the same.

Sorting and Classifying Mats: LEGO Theme give kindergarten and first grade kids hands-on practice sorting LEGO® bricks by color and size.

Kids pick a sorting rule, like sort by color or sort by size, and place LEGO® bricks on the classification mat. On the Venn diagram, they sort bricks that are red, square or both.

The Venn diagram is a fun way to show kids that some objects belong in two groups at once.

How to Use Sorting and Classifying Mats: LEGO Theme

  1. Print the mats (laminate for longer use).
  2. Kids choose or are given a sorting rule.
  3. Kids sort the bricks onto the mat.
  4. Kids explain their rule.
  5. Kids try the Venn diagram with two rules.

STEM Center: Set out the mats with a tub of bricks.

Small Group: Sort together and talk about the bricks in the middle of the Venn diagram.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These LEGO® Mats

Every group has a mix of math and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Sort by color first.
  • Use a few bricks.
  • Use the labeled Venn diagram.
  • Sort together.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Sort by color and by size.
  • Explain each rule.
  • Use the Venn diagram.
  • Count each group.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Make your own rule.
  • Have a friend guess your rule.
  • Use three groups.
  • Graph your sort.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Talk through each step together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use real objects next to the cards.
  • Name each picture together.
