Standards for Expanded Form

This matching game supports second grade place value standards connected to standard form and expanded form.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens and ones. Kids tell the value of each digit.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.NS.2.b: Read, write and represent three-digit numbers in standard form, expanded form and word form, using concrete or pictorial representations. Kids match each number to its expanded form.
  • 2.NS.2.c: Apply patterns within the base 10 system to determine and communicate, orally and in written form, the place (ones, tens, hundreds) and value of each digit in a three-digit whole number. Kids say the value of each digit.

Each number card has a match that shows the same number in expanded form, like 419 and 400 + 10 + 9. Kids flip two cards at a time and look for a match.

Play it face up as a matching activity first, then face down as a matching game once kids know the routine.

How to Use Expanded Form Matching Game: Fall Scarecrow Theme

  1. Print, laminate and cut apart the cards.
  2. Mix the cards and place them face down.
  3. Kids flip two cards and read them out loud.
  4. If the number and expanded form match, kids keep the pair.
  5. Play until all the cards are matched.
