DUPLO Block Number Mats

  • 10 color mats for numbers 1-10
  • Each mat includes:
    • A number from 1 to 10 drawn with block outlines
    • That many single blocks to count at the bottom of the mat

Mats print one per page in full color.

Required Materials:

  • Paper, Printer, Ink
  • Laminator (recommended so the mats last)
  • DUPLO blocks

Standards for Counting, Cardinality and Number Sense

These DUPLO block number mats support early math standards connected to counting objects, one-to-one correspondence, matching numbers to amounts and forming numerals.

Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3: Write numbers from 0 to 20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. Kids build each numeral with blocks.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Every mat connects a numeral with a matching set of blocks.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions. Kids count the single blocks at the bottom of each mat.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics

  • PK4.V.A.2: Children count up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence. Kids touch each block as they count.
  • PK4.V.A.3: Children count up to 10 items and show that the last number counted tells how many are in the set.
  • TEKS K.2C: Count a set of objects and show that the last number said tells how many are in the set.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set. Kids place one real block on each block picture as they count.
  • K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects to match a given numeral. Kids build a tower with the same number of blocks as the mat.

DUPLO Block Number Mats help preschool and kindergarten kids recognize numbers 1-10, count objects and build each number with DUPLO blocks in a hands-on printable math activity.

Build it, count it! Kids grab a bin of DUPLO blocks and snap together each number right on the mat.

Every mat shows a number from 1 to 10 drawn with colorful block outlines. Kids match real blocks to each outline to build the number, then count the single blocks at the bottom to see how much each number stands for.

Building with blocks is a fine motor workout so kids strengthen their hands while they learn how each number is shaped.

Print the mats in color and laminate them so they hold up to lots of building again and again.

How to Use DUPLO Block Number Mats

  1. Choose a mat and say the number together.
  2. Match DUPLO blocks to the outlines to build the number.
  3. Count the single blocks at the bottom of the mat and place a real block on each one.

Small Group: Give each child a mat and a pile of blocks. Everyone builds their number, counts the blocks at the bottom and shares how many with the group. Pass the mats to the left and play again.

Independent Practice: Set the mats in a math or building center with a bin of DUPLO blocks. Kids work through the numbers in order or pick any mat to build and count.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Number Mats

Every group of kids has a mix of counting, number recognition and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with numbers 1-5 and add more mats as counting becomes steady.
  • Sort the blocks by color first so kids can match each outline.
  • Touch and count each block together.
  • Build the first part of the number together, then let kids finish.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Use all 10 mats in order.
  • Have kids say the number after building it.
  • Count how many blocks it took to build each number.
  • Have a partner count the blocks to check the work.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Mix up the mats and put them in order from 1 to 10.
  • Say a number and have kids find the matching mat.
  • Build a tower with the same number of blocks as the mat.
  • Compare two mats and tell which number uses more blocks.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Model the number word and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Hand over one block at a time and help press the blocks together for kids who are building hand strength.
  • Repeat the same small set of numbers across several sessions.
  • Name the block colors together as kids build for extra language practice.
