Standards for 2D Shapes
These clip cards support early math standards connected to naming shapes and finding shapes in everyday objects.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes. Kids name the shape of everyday objects.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Kids name each shape on the cards.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics
- PK4.V.C.1: Child names and describes common 2D shapes and names at least 1 solid 3D shape. Kids name and describe each shape.
- TEKS K.6(A): Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles and squares as special rectangles. Kids find and name each shape.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.MG.2: Identify, describe, name, compare and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares and rectangles). Kids name and compare the shapes.
2D Shape Clip Cards give preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on shape practice as they look at each picture and clip the shape that matches.
The cards show kids holding everyday objects and shape word cards, so kids practice finding shapes in the world around them.
Kids name the shape, then clip a clothespin or paper clip on the correct answer. Using both clothespins and paper clips builds different fine motor skills.
How to Use 2D Shape Clip Cards
- Print, laminate and cut apart the clip cards.
- Add a colored dot on the back of each correct answer if you want the cards to be self-checking.
- Kids name the picture and think about its shape.
- Kids clip the matching shape and flip the card to check.
Small Group: Name each shape together and trace it with a finger.
Math Center: Set out the cards and clothespins for independent practice.
Easy Ways to Differentiate This Shape Activity
Every group has a mix of shape knowledge and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Start with circles, squares and triangles.
- Trace the shapes with a finger.
- Name the choices together.
- Use paper clips if clothespins are hard to pinch.
For On-Level Practice:
- Use all the cards.
- Say the shape name with each answer.
- Flip the card to check.
- Count the sides and corners.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Find the same shape in the room.
- Describe each shape by its sides and corners.
- Draw the shape after clipping it.
- Sort the cards by shape.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Name the shapes together and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Pinching clothespins builds fine motor strength.
- Use the same cards across several sessions.
