Set the stage for giggles, geometry, and a fast-paced shape hunt!
This 2D Shapes I Spy “Flip” Board Game is a bright, engaging way to help young learners build visual discrimination, shape recognition, and scanning skills... all while having fun!
Designed with preschool and kindergarten in mind, this game brings the perfect mix of academic practice and playful competition to small groups, math centers, partner games, or even speech and occupational therapy sessions.
Skills Covered:
- 2D shape identification (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, pentagon, hexagon, heart, star, crescent, and more)
- Visual discrimination and scanning (critical for pre-reading and early math skills)
- Attention and processing speed
- Social interaction and turn-taking
- Fine motor skills through flipping and pointing
Learning Standards Addressed:
This activity supports early learning standards from Common Core, Texas Pre-K, and Virginia ELDS:
Common Core State Standards:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.3: Identify shapes as two-dimensional or three-dimensional
Texas Pre-K Guidelines:
- Domain V – Mathematics: Recognizes and compares shapes, explores spatial relationships, develops geometry concepts
Virginia ELDS:
- Cognitive Development – Mathematics: Identifies and describes shapes; matches and categorizes based on shape properties
How to Use:
- Print the boards, flip cards, and tokens on cardstock and laminate for durability.
- Each player flips a card at the same time and races to find the matching shape on the board.
- The first to find it wins a token!
- Play continues until all cards have been flipped.
- The player with the most tokens wins!
You can easily differentiate by limiting which shapes are in play or supporting with shape posters as visual aids. For extra fun, tuck this into a sensory bin or add a timer for a speed round!
