Unicorn Counting Grids 10, 20 and 100

  • Rainbow and unicorn counting grid mats in color with 4 levels: count to 5, 10, 20 and 100
  • Ten-frame, double ten-frame and hundred grid mats
  • Black and white versions of every mat
  • Printable dice and differentiated cube inserts
  • Instruction page with differentiation tips

Each mat has an “I can…” statement at the top, so kids know exactly what number they are counting to.

Required Materials:

  • Paper, printer and ink
  • Laminator or dry erase pockets
  • Dice or a differentiated instruction cube
  • Small game markers like mini unicorn erasers or pom poms

Standards for Counting and Cardinality

These counting grids support early math standards connected to counting objects, ten-frames and counting to 100.

Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. Kids count markers and match the amount to a number.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array or a circle. Kids count the markers to check their work.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics

  • PK4.V.A.2: Child counts up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence. Kids touch and count each object.
  • PK4.V.A.3: Child counts up to 10 items and demonstrates cardinality by communicating that the last number indicates how many items are in the set. Kids say how many after counting.
  • TEKS K.2(B): Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures. Kids show each number with objects.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to determine how many are in a given set. Kids count each set one object at a time.

Unicorn Counting Grids give preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on counting practice as they roll a die and fill a rainbow grid one marker at a time.

The color mats show bright rainbows, and the 4 levels let you start with counting to 5 and work all the way up to 100.

Kids roll a die, count out that many markers and place them on the grid. They keep rolling until every space is full, then count all the markers.

Use the black and white mats for morning work, math folders or take-home practice.

How to Use Unicorn Counting Grids 10, 20 and 100

  1. Print and laminate the mats you want to use.
  2. Kids read the “I can…” statement at the top of the mat.
  3. Kids roll a die and add that many markers to the grid.
  4. Keep rolling until all the spaces are filled.
  5. Count the markers together.

Partner Play: Partners take turns rolling on the same mat until it is full.

Math Center: Set out the mats, dice and markers for independent practice.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Counting Grids

Every group has a mix of counting skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with the count to 5 mat.
  • Use a die with dots.
  • Count each marker out loud.
  • Use large markers.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Use the ten-frame and double ten-frame mats.
  • Count how many more spaces are left.
  • Say the total after each roll.
  • Use number dice.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Use the hundred grid.
  • Roll two dice and add them.
  • Count by tens on the hundred grid.
  • Race a partner to fill a grid.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Say the numbers together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Picking up small markers builds fine motor strength.
  • Use the same mat across several sessions.

Unicorn Counting Grids 10, 20 and 100 Are Perfect For:
