Standards for STEM, Building and Problem Solving
These Pattern Block challenge cards support early learning standards connected to building, problem solving and following directions.
NGSS and Common Core State Standards
- NGSS K-2-ETS1-2: Develop a simple sketch, drawing or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. Kids build a model to meet each challenge.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/”less of” the attribute. Kids build things that are taller, shorter, longer or wider.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
- PK4.V.C.2: Child creates shapes using materials. Kids build shapes and structures for each challenge.
- PK4.IX.B.2: Child shows increasing control of tasks that require eye-hand coordination. Kids fit the pieces together as they build.
STEM Challenge Cards: Pattern Block give preschool and kindergarten kids fun building challenges that build problem solving, creativity and fine motor skills.
Kids pick a card, read the challenge with help and build it with pattern blocks. There is no single right answer, so every child can find their own way to solve it.
Use the cards in a STEM center, for early finishers or as a quick morning challenge. Kids can draw or take a picture of what they built.
