Type of Resource: PDF
Number of Pages: 9
Coordinating Activities
STEM Challenge Dice: Pattern Blocks
- Pattern block shape die to cut and fold (color and black and white)
- Number die 1-6 to cut and fold
- Shape cards and number cards to use without dice
- Shapes: square, triangle, hexagon, trapezoid, parallelogram and rhombus
Kids roll the shape die and the number die, then build something using that many of that pattern block.
Required Materials:
- Paper, printer and ink (cardstock works well)
- Scissors and glue or tape
- Pattern blocks
Standards for Shapes and Engineering
This STEM challenge supports early math and engineering standards connected to naming and combining shapes.
Common Core State Standards
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.6: Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes. Kids combine pattern blocks to build their design.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Kids name the shape they roll.
- NGSS K-2-ETS1-2: Develop a simple sketch, drawing or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. Kids plan and build with the shapes they roll.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
- PK4.V.C.1: Child names and describes common 2D shapes and names at least 1 solid 3D shape. Kids name each pattern block.
- TEKS K.6(A): Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles and squares as special rectangles. Kids find each shape they roll.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.MG.2: Identify, describe, name, compare and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares and rectangles). Kids name and build with the shapes.
STEM Challenge Dice: Pattern Blocks give preschool, kindergarten and first grade kids an open-ended building challenge with pattern blocks.
Kids roll a shape die and a number die. If they roll a hexagon and a 4, they build something using 4 hexagons. Every roll is a new challenge.
Use the shape and number cards in a bag for kids who are not ready to fold dice. Take a picture of each creation to share.
How to Use STEM Challenge Dice: Pattern Blocks
- Print and cut out the dice, then fold and glue or tape them.
- Kids roll the shape die and the number die.
- Kids name the shape and count out that many pattern blocks.
- Kids build a design or picture with the blocks.
- Kids tell a friend what they built.
STEM Center: Set out the dice with a tub of pattern blocks.
Small Group: Roll together and compare what each child builds.
Easy Ways to Differentiate This STEM Challenge
Every group has a mix of shape, counting and building skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Use only the shape die.
- Use the picture cards.
- Count the blocks together.
- Build next to a friend.
For On-Level Practice:
- Roll and build 5 times.
- Name each shape.
- Count each set of blocks.
- Tell about each build.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Roll twice and use both shapes.
- Draw your build.
- Make a symmetrical design.
- Build a picture of an animal.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Say each pattern together and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Use large foam pattern blocks.
- Use the shape and number cards in a bag for kids who have trouble rolling.
STEM Challenge Dice: Pattern Blocks Are Perfect For:
- Preschool and pre-K
- Kindergarten
- First grade
