How to Play the Scientist I Spy Board Game
- Choose one science lab-themed I Spy board and place it in the center.
- Deal the science tool cards face down to each player.
- On each turn, players flip their top card and race to “spy” the matching picture on the board.
- The first to spot it earns a token!
- Keep flipping until all cards are matched. The student with the most tokens wins!
You can also adapt the game for independent play by giving one student a board and the full deck of cards. They flip, scan, and cover each match using tokens, mini erasers, or manipulatives for quiet skill practice.
Perfect For:
- Science centers and STEM lessons – Add hands-on fun to your science lab unit by giving students a chance to interact with images of real science tools. The game reinforces science vocabulary while making your STEM time feel like an exciting discovery session.
- Indoor recess or rainy days – Instead of losing focus when kids are stuck inside, this sensory activity keeps them busy, moving, and learning. Students will love the competitive play, and you’ll love that it continues to build visual discrimination and vocabulary skills while they play.
- Speech therapy and ELL practice – The clear, colorful images of scientists and science tools make it easy to connect new words with real-world objects. Great for articulation practice, labeling activities, and sentence building, this game helps students grow in both expressive and receptive language.
- Occupational therapy sessions – Students strengthen visual scanning, focus, and attention to detail as they search for images on the board. The act of pointing, covering with tokens, or moving game pieces also adds a fine motor element that makes this activity perfect for OT goals.
- Sub plans and early finishers – Need something easy to pull out at a moment’s notice? This no-prep game is a classroom lifesaver. It gives students meaningful practice in science vocabulary and cooperative play, while keeping the energy positive and productive for subs or independent learners.
