Standards Connections
The matching, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and collaborative play included in this Community Helpers Firefighter BINGO game connect with several early learning and kindergarten standards.
Common Core State Standards
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1.A: Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions, including listening to others and taking turns speaking.

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.6: Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.
These standards connect naturally to students listening for a firefighter vocabulary word, locating the matching picture, participating in group play, and using words related to firefighters, firefighter equipment, community helpers, and fire safety.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
- TEKS K.1.A: Listen actively and ask questions to understand information and answer questions using multi-word responses.
- TEKS K.1.B: Restate and follow oral directions that involve a short, related sequence of actions.
- TEKS K.1.C: Share information and ideas by speaking audibly and clearly using the conventions of language.
- TEKS K.3.B: Use illustrations and texts the student is able to read or hear to learn or clarify word meanings.
Students practice these skills as they listen for firefighter vocabulary, follow BINGO directions, communicate during group play, and connect spoken words with corresponding pictures.
Virginia Standards of Learning
- VA SOL K.C.1: Participate in collaborative discussions with peers and adults on kindergarten topics.
- VA SOL K.C.1: Listen actively and follow agreed-upon rules for participating in discussions, including waiting for a turn to speak and staying on topic.
- VA SOL K.C.1: Ask questions to seek information or clarify understanding.
- VA SOL K.C.2: Participate in a variety of oral language activities.
- VA SOL K.LU.1: Use language to identify and name people, places, things, and actions.
Virginia’s current kindergarten communication standards specifically emphasize listening, collaboration, participation in discussions, and oral language development, which fit the way students interact during this Firefighter BINGO activity.
Skills Students Practice
Primary Academic and Language Skills
Matching: Students match the firefighter picture shown or named by the adult to the corresponding picture on their BINGO board.
Firefighter Vocabulary: Children hear and practice words connected to firefighters, firefighter equipment, fire stations, and fire safety.
Community Helpers Vocabulary: Firefighter BINGO provides an easy way to explore firefighters as community helpers and talk about the people, tools, and equipment associated with their work.
Receptive Language: Students listen to the vocabulary word called and identify the corresponding picture.
Expressive Language: Encourage children to name pictures, describe familiar objects, or talk about what different pieces of firefighter equipment are used for based on their individual communication skills.
Visual Discrimination: Students scan a 4 x 4 picture grid, compare images, and locate the correct match.
Secondary Life and Learning Skills
Playing BINGO also gives children opportunities to practice:
- Listening to directions
- Maintaining attention during group play
- Taking turns
- Waiting for the next calling card
- Visual scanning
- Fine motor control when placing BINGO markers
- Participating in a group activity
- Communicating choices and answers
Matching, listening, and group play are also identified as activity focuses in the resource.
Community Helpers BINGO: Firefighter
Firefighter BINGO gives kids a playful way to explore community helpers, build firefighter vocabulary, and practice matching, listening, and visual discrimination during your fire safety theme.
Students listen for a firefighter vocabulary word, look across their BINGO board for the matching picture, and cover the image with a BINGO chip, mini eraser, counter, or dot marker. As they play, children become more familiar with common firefighter equipment and fire safety vocabulary including fire truck, firefighter, hose, helmet, ladder, hydrant, extinguisher, boots, alarm, fire station, and more.
With 30 different Firefighter BINGO boards, this community helpers activity gives you enough unique boards for whole-class play while still being easy to use for small groups, centers, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and individual practice. The resource includes both color and black-and-white formats, so you can choose the version that works best for your classroom and printing needs.
How to Play Firefighter BINGO
1. Prepare the game. Print the Firefighter BINGO boards and calling cards in color or black and white. Cut apart the calling cards and laminate the pieces if you want to reuse them throughout the year.
2. Play BINGO. Give each student a board and BINGO markers. Draw a firefighter vocabulary card, say the word aloud, and show the picture as appropriate for your group. Students search their boards and cover the matching picture when they find it.
3. Adjust the game for your students. Use the picture cards as both visual and verbal prompts for children who benefit from extra support. For additional language practice, call the vocabulary word without showing the card and have students find the picture by listening.
Easy Ways to Differentiate Firefighter BINGO
For Children Who Need More Support: Show the picture card while saying the firefighter vocabulary word. Help students visually scan one row at a time, or play alongside them and model the matching process.
For On-Level Practice: Say the vocabulary word without immediately showing the picture. Students listen, find the matching firefighter picture, and cover it independently.
For an Extra Challenge: Give clues about an object instead of naming it. Students use the description to determine which firefighter vocabulary picture they need to find.
For Speech, ELL, or Special Education Support: Use the calling cards separately for vocabulary practice before playing BINGO. Children can match identical pictures, point to a named item, name pictures, or practice short phrases and sentences at their individual communication level.
For Fine Motor or OT Practice: Change the type of BINGO marker. Mini erasers, counters, pom-poms with tongs, reusable manipulatives, or dot markers add different fine motor actions without changing the basic matching activity.
