    • A traceable number with a starting star and directional arrows
    • The Spanish number word (uno through diez)
    • A detective suitcase picture with that many clues and tools to count
    • An empty ten-frame to fill

Cards print two per page. Choose the color set for a bright math center or the black and white set to save ink.

  • Paper Cutter
  • Laminator (recommended so the cards last)
  • Counters, mini erasers or small balls of play dough
  • Dry-erase markers (optional, for tracing on laminated cards)

Standards for Counting, Cardinality and Number Sense

These detective ten-frame cards support early math standards connected to counting objects, one-to-one correspondence, matching numbers to amounts and writing numerals.

Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3: Write numbers from 0 to 20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. Kids trace each number right after counting the clues.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Every card connects a numeral, a number word and a set of objects.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions. Kids count the clues and fill the ten-frame to match.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics

  • PK4.V.A.2: Children count up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence. Kids touch each of the clues as they count, then place one counter in each box.
  • PK4.V.A.3: Children count up to 10 items and show that the last number counted tells how many are in the set.
  • TEKS K.2C: Count a set of objects and show that the last number said tells how many are in the set.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set. Each card gives kids a new set to count.
  • K.NS.1.c: Show counting by ones with tools like ten-frames. Kids build each number on the ten-frame, one box at a time.
  • K.NS.2.b: Build a set of objects to match a given numeral. Kids fill the ten-frame to match the number on the card.

Detective Counting Ten-Frame Cards in Spanish help preschool and kindergarten kids count objects, show amounts on a ten-frame and learn the Spanish number words for 1-10 with a hands-on printable math activity.

Count the clues. Fill the ten-frame. Trace the number. Every card is a little counting case for your young detectives to crack!

Every card shows a number from 1 to 10, the Spanish number word and an open detective suitcase with that many clues and tools inside. The suitcase fills up one item at a time, from a single hat on uno to a case packed with detective gear on diez so kids can actually see each number get bigger.

Children count the clues, then show the same amount on the ten-frame below. A ten-frame is a simple 2 x 5 grid that helps kids see numbers in groups of five and ten. It’s one of the best tools for building early number sense.

The traceable numbers include a starting star and arrows so kids practice correct number formation every time they trace.

These Spanish counting cards fit right into dual-language and Spanish immersion classrooms, bilingual homes and groups with Spanish-speaking English learners. They’re also a fun way for English speakers to learn uno through diez.

Print the color set for centers or the black and white set to save ink. Laminate the cards and they’re ready for counters, dry-erase markers and play dough again and again.

How to Use Detective Ten-Frame Cards

  1. Choose a card and count the clues together.
  2. Place a counter, mini eraser or small ball of play dough in the ten-frame for each one you counted.
  3. Trace the number with a finger or dry-erase marker and say the number word in Spanish.

Small Group: Give each child a card. Everyone counts, fills their ten-frame and shares their number with the group. Pass the cards to the left and play again.

Independent Practice: Set the cards in a math center with a cup of counters. Kids work through the numbers in order or pick any card to count, fill and trace.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Counting Cards

Every group of kids has a mix of counting, number recognition and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with numbers 1-5 and add more cards as counting becomes steady.
  • Touch and count each of the clues together before filling the ten-frame.
  • Place counters right on the picture first, then move them to the ten-frame one at a time.
  • Trace the number with a finger before using a marker.
  • Model filling the top row of the ten-frame from left to right.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Use all 10 cards in order.
  • Have kids say the Spanish number word after counting.
  • Trace the numbers with a dry-erase marker.
  • Ask kids to check their work by counting the filled boxes.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Mix up the cards and put them in order from 1 to 10.
  • Say a number in Spanish and have kids find the matching card.
  • Ask how many more counters it would take to fill the ten-frame and make 10.
  • Cover the picture and have kids build the amount from the numeral alone.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Model the number word and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use tongs or tweezers to place counters for added fine motor practice.
  • Repeat the same small set of numbers across several sessions.
  • Pair each Spanish number word with the English word for multilingual learners.
