Standards for 2D Shapes

These activities support early math standards connected to naming shapes and finding them in the real world.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes. Kids name the shape of each real object, like a clock or a kite.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Kids name each shape card in the game.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics

  • PK4.V.C.1: Child names and describes common 2D shapes and names at least 1 solid 3D shape. Kids name and describe each shape.
  • TEKS K.6(A): Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles and squares as special rectangles. Kids find each shape on the cards.

Virginia Standards of Learning

  • K.MG.2: Identify, describe, name, compare and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares and rectangles). Kids name and compare the shapes on the cards.

2D Shape Activity Pack gives preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on practice naming shapes and finding them in everyday objects.

The pack has four ways to practice: a matching game, sentence building cards, a flip book and a spin and cover game. Every activity connects each shape to something kids see every day.

Start with the matching game, then build sentences like “This is a cone.” Kids make their own flip book to take home.

How to Use 2D Shape Activity Pack

  1. Print, laminate and cut apart the cards.
  2. Play the matching game: flip two cards and look for a shape and an object that go together.
  3. Build “This is a…” sentences with the cards.
  4. Cut, sort and staple the flip book.
  5. Spin the spinner and cover the matching shape.

Small Group: Play the matching game together and talk about each match.

Shape Hunt: Look for the same shapes around the room after the game.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Shape Activities

Every group has a mix of shape and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Play the matching game face up.
  • Start with 3 shapes.
  • Use real objects next to the cards.
  • Name each shape together.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Play every activity in the pack.
  • Read the sentence cards.
  • Make the flip book.
  • Name each shape and object.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Find more real objects for each shape.
  • Write a new “This is a…” sentence.
  • Count the sides and corners of each shape.
  • Play the matching game with more cards.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Name each shape together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Trace each shape with a finger to feel the sides and corners.
  • Use real shape blocks next to the pages.
