Standards for Comparing Numbers
These activities support math standards connected to comparing numbers and using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols.
Common Core State Standards
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.3: Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the greater than, equal to and less than symbols. Kids compare each pair of numbers on the mats.
TEKS for Mathematics
- TEKS 1.2(G): Represent the comparison of two numbers to 100 using the greater than, less than or equal to symbols. Kids compare each pair of numbers on the mats.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- 1.NS.2.e: Compare two numbers between 0 and 120 represented pictorially or with concrete objects. Kids compare each pair of numbers on the mats.
Greater Than Less Than: Penguin Theme gives kindergarten and first grade kids hands-on practice comparing numbers with a penguin theme.
Kids pick two number cards, place them on the greater than or less than mat and read the number sentence out loud, like “15 is greater than 9.”
The mats show the symbol, so kids can see which way it points as they say the comparison.
