Bee Math Worksheets

  • 1 Hexagon Math with Buzzing Bees addition page with 60 facts within 20
  • 1 Hexagon Math with Buzzing Bees subtraction page with 60 facts within 20
  • 1 Measure the Hexagons page with 4 hexagons to measure and find the perimeter
  • 1 Buzzing Bees Word Problems page with 2 addition and 2 subtraction story problems
  • 1 Finish the Busy Bees Patterns page with 5 picture patterns
  • 1 page of cut-out picture pieces to finish the patterns

Each honeycomb on the addition and subtraction pages has six facts with the same answer, so kids solve the facts and write that answer in the empty center hexagon. Print in color.

Required Materials:

  • Paper, Printer, Ink
  • Pencils
  • Centimeter ruler (for the Measure the Hexagons page)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Standards for Addition, Subtraction, Measurement and Patterns

These bee math worksheets support early and upper elementary math standards connected to addition and subtraction facts within 20, word problems, measuring length, perimeter and patterns.

Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20. Kids solve the addition and subtraction facts on each honeycomb.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. Kids solve the four Buzzing Bees word problems.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. Kids find the shared answer for each honeycomb of facts.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1: Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers. Kids measure each hexagon side with a centimeter ruler.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.D.8: Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons. Kids find the perimeter of each hexagon.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics

  • TEKS 1.3D: Apply basic fact strategies to add and subtract within 20. Kids solve the honeycomb facts.
  • TEKS 1.5D: Represent word problems involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers up to 20 using pictorial models and number sentences. Kids write a number sentence for each word problem.
  • TEKS 2.4A: Recall basic facts to add and subtract within 20 with automaticity. Kids practice 60 addition and 60 subtraction facts.
  • TEKS 2.9D: Determine the length of an object to the nearest marked unit using rulers. Kids measure each hexagon side in centimeters.
  • TEKS 3.7B: Determine the perimeter of a polygon. Kids find the perimeter of each hexagon.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.CE.1.d: Represent, solve and justify solutions to contextual problems. Kids solve the Buzzing Bees word problems.
  • 2.CE.1.f: Recall with automaticity addition and subtraction facts within 20. Kids solve the honeycomb facts.
  • 2.PFA.1.b: Analyze a pattern, generalize the change and extend it. Kids finish the Busy Bees picture patterns.
  • 3.MG.1.b.i: Measure the length of an object to the nearest centimeter. Kids measure each hexagon side.
  • 3.MG.2.b.iii: Given the lengths of all sides of a polygon, determine its perimeter. Kids find the perimeter of each hexagon.

Bee Math Worksheets give early and upper elementary kids buzzing practice with addition, subtraction, word problems, measurement and patterns in one print and go pack.

The bees are busy and your mathematicians will be too!

On the Hexagon Math pages, every honeycomb holds six facts that share the same answer. Kids solve each fact and write the answer in the empty hexagon in the middle. If one fact gives a different answer, they know to go back and check it.

The Measure the Hexagons page brings out the centimeter ruler. Kids measure one side of each hexagon, then multiply by 6 sides to find the perimeter.

The Buzzing Bees Word Problems page has four short stories about bees, flowers and honey pots for kids to solve with addition or subtraction.

The Finish the Busy Bees Patterns page wraps it up with five picture patterns and a page of bee, hive and honey pieces to cut out and glue in place.

How to Use Bee Math Worksheets

  1. Print the pages you want to use.
  2. Solve the facts in each honeycomb and write the answer in the center hexagon.
  3. Measure each hexagon with a centimeter ruler and find the perimeter.
  4. Solve the word problems, then cut out the pieces and finish the patterns.

Small Group: Work through one honeycomb together and talk about how all six facts make the same answer, then let kids try the next one on their own.

Independent Practice: Add the pages to morning work, a math center or a spring folder with a pencil, a centimeter ruler and a glue stick.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Bee Math Worksheets

Every class has a mix of fact fluency, measuring and problem solving skills. These simple changes keep the pages familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with the honeycombs that use smaller numbers.
  • Use counters, a number line or a ten-frame to solve the facts.
  • Read the word problems aloud and act them out with small objects.
  • Measure the hexagons together and skip the perimeter at first.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Complete one honeycomb at a time and check that all six answers match.
  • Write a number sentence for each word problem.
  • Measure each hexagon and find the perimeter.
  • Finish the patterns and read each one aloud.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Time a honeycomb and try to beat that time.
  • Write a new fact that belongs in each honeycomb.
  • Write a bee word problem for a partner to solve.
  • Create a new bee pattern with the leftover pieces.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Model each word problem and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use the cut and glue pattern page for scissor and fine motor practice.
  • Talk about bees, hives and honey to build vocabulary before solving.

Bee Math Worksheets Are Perfect For:
