Standards for Letter Recognition and Letter Formation

These ocean alphabet cards support early literacy standards connected to naming letters and forming uppercase and lowercase letters.

Common Core State Standards: English Language Arts

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D: Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids name the letter on each card before they write it.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A: Print many upper- and lowercase letters. Kids practice forming each letter in the salt tray.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading

  • PK4.III.C.1: Child recognizes and names at least 20 letters. Kids say the letter name on each card.
  • TEKS ELA K.2(E): Develop handwriting by accurately forming all uppercase and lowercase letters. Kids copy each letter in the tray.

Virginia English Standards of Learning

  • K.FFR.3.A: Identify capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids name each letter as they work.
  • K.FFW.1.B: Print capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids form each capital and lowercase letter.

Ocean Alphabet Salt Tray Tracing Cards give preschool and kindergarten kids a hands-on, sensory way to practice naming and writing uppercase and lowercase letters in a salt tray.

Each big letter sits on a bright ocean scene. Add blue sand or sea-themed sprinkles to the tray for an ocean sensory bin.

Set a card next to a tray of salt, sand or sugar. Kids name the letter, then write it in the tray with a finger, a small stick or a paintbrush. Shake the tray to erase and try the next letter.

Use the color cards for a bright center or the black and white cards to save ink. The cards also work as big flash cards or as a matching game with the uppercase and lowercase sets.

How to Use Ocean Alphabet Salt Tray Tracing Cards

  1. Print, laminate and cut apart the letter cards.
  2. Fill a shallow tray with salt, sand, sugar or rice.
  3. Kids pick a card and say the letter name.
  4. Kids write the letter in the tray, then shake it smooth to try again.

Small Group: Work on a few letters together. Say the letter name and talk about each line and curve as kids write.

Literacy Center: Put the cards in a center with a salt tray so kids can practice on their own.

Easy Ways to Differentiate These Alphabet Cards

Every group has a mix of letter knowledge and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with the letters in the child’s name.
  • Trace the letter with a finger first.
  • Use hand-over-hand help for the first few letters.
  • Work on just 3 to 5 letters at a time.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Name and write each letter in order.
  • Practice uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Say the letter sound after writing the letter.
  • Write each letter 3 times.

  • Write the letter without looking at the card.
  • Spell a short name or word with the cards.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Say the letter name and sound together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • The salt tray adds sensory input while kids write.
