Each board is filled with spring flowers showing the uppercase and lowercase forms of one letter. Kids spin, name the letter and cover a match.

  • Paper, printer and ink
  • Laminator
  • Paper clip and paper fastener (or a pencil) for the spinner
  • Game markers, mini erasers or dot markers

Standards for Letter Recognition

This spring alphabet game supports early literacy standards connected to naming uppercase and lowercase letters and telling them apart.

Common Core State Standards: English Language Arts

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D: Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids name the letter on the spinner and find it on the board.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading

  • PK4.III.C.1: Child recognizes and names at least 20 letters. Kids say the letter name with every spin.
  • TEKS ELA K.2(D)(v): Demonstrate print awareness by identifying all uppercase and lowercase letters. Kids tell the uppercase and lowercase forms apart on each board.

Virginia English Standards of Learning

  • K.FFR.3.A: Identify capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids find and cover the capital or lowercase letter they spin.

Spring Alphabet Spin and Cover gives preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on practice naming and telling apart uppercase and lowercase letters with a quick spin and cover game for every letter.

Each board is a spring garden full of flowers with a sunflower spinner. Kids find flowers with the same letter they spin.

Kids spin the spinner to land on the uppercase or lowercase letter, then find and cover one picture with that letter. Play until the board is covered or set a timer for a quick round.

Use the color boards for a bright center or the black and white boards with dot markers for a no-prep option. With a board for every letter, the game fits right into letter of the week.

How to Use Spring Alphabet Spin and Cover

  1. Print and laminate the boards for the letters you want to practice.
  2. Make a spinner with a paper clip and paper fastener, or hold a paper clip in place with a pencil.
  3. Kids spin and say the letter name.
  4. Kids cover one matching letter on the board.
  5. Keep playing until every letter is covered.

Partner Play: Partners take turns spinning on the same board until every letter is covered.

Literacy Center: Put out the board for this week’s letter with markers and a spinner.

Easy Ways to Differentiate This Spin and Cover Game

Every group has a mix of letter knowledge, attention and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the game familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with the letters in the child’s name.
  • Name both forms of the letter together before playing.
  • Point to a few matches on the board as examples.
  • Let kids cover any letter that matches, uppercase or lowercase.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Cover only the form shown on the spinner.
  • Say the letter sound with each spin.
  • Play a board for each letter of the week.
  • Count how many letters are covered.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Name a word that starts with the letter on every spin.
  • Write the letter each time you cover one.
  • Play two boards at once with two different letters.
  • Race a partner to cover all the uppercase letters.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Say the letter name and sound together and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use mini erasers or pom poms with tongs for added fine motor practice.
  • Work on the same letters across several sessions.
