Standards for Counting, Sorting and Patterns

This Owl math pack supports early math standards connected to counting, sorting and graphing objects and continuing patterns.

Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Kids connect numbers to sets of erasers.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5: Count to answer “how many?” questions. Kids count how many of each color they find.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3: Classify objects into given categories and count the number of objects in each category. Kids sort and graph erasers by color.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics

  • PK4.V.A.2: Children count up to 10 objects with one-to-one correspondence. Kids count erasers one at a time.
  • TEKS K.2C: Count a set of objects and show that the last number said tells how many are in the set.
  • TEKS K.8B: Use data to create real-object and picture graphs. Kids spin and graph the matching erasers.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • K.NS.1.a: Use one-to-one correspondence to find how many are in a set. Kids touch and count each eraser once.
  • K.NS.1.c: Represent counting using tools like ten-frames. The ten-frame cards show each number from 1 to 10.
  • K.PFA.1: Identify, describe, extend and create repeating patterns. Kids continue the color patterns on the pattern strips.

Owl Mini Eraser Math Pack helps preschool and kindergarten kids count, sort, graph and make patterns with mini erasers in a hands-on printable math pack.

Grab a handful of mini owl erasers and get ready for some owl math fun!

Kids spin the spinner and cover the matching owls on the Spin and Cover mat, count each color on the color counting page and spin and graph to see which color wins. The Spin and Sort mat lets kids sort erasers by color.

The count-and-color page builds a staircase of numbers from 1 to 10, the pattern strips let kids continue color patterns with real erasers and the ten-frame cards show each number from 1 to 10 as a set, a numeral and a number word.

Mini erasers make every activity hands-on. Kids love using them again and again.

Store the mats and a cup of mini owl erasers together for a quick math tub or center.

How to Use Owl Mini Eraser Math Pack

  1. Choose a mat and set out the mini erasers.
  2. Spin the spinner or read the page directions.
  3. Count, cover, sort, graph or pattern with the erasers.
  4. Clear the mat and play again.

Small Group: Give each child a mat and a cup of erasers. Take turns spinning, then everyone covers, sorts or graphs on their own mat.

Independent Practice: Rotate one or two mats through a math center each week. Kids spin and work with the erasers on their own.

Easy Ways to Differentiate This Math Pack

Every group of kids has a mix of counting, number recognition and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.

For Children Who Need More Support:

  • Start with the Spin and Sort mat.
  • Spin together and name the color before covering.
  • Use fewer erasers at a time.
  • Use larger counters for kids who are still building hand strength.

For On-Level Practice:

  • Rotate through each mat in the pack.
  • Have kids say how many of each color they found.
  • Count the graph columns and tell which has the most.
  • Work with a partner and take turns spinning.

For an Extra Challenge:

  • Make your own pattern on a blank strip.
  • Put the ten-frame cards in order from 1 to 10.
  • Tell how many more one color has than another on the graph.
  • Write the number word for each count.

For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:

  • Model the number word and give plenty of wait time.
  • Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
  • Use tongs or tweezers to place mini erasers for added fine motor practice.
  • Repeat the same small set of numbers across several sessions.
  • Name the colors of the owls as kids work.
