Coordinating Activities
Weather Roll and Graph Set
- 2 weather roll and graph sets, each with a picture cube to build and a graph to fill in
- Color and black and white versions
Kids roll the picture cube, find the matching column and fill in one box for each roll.
Required Materials:
- Paper, printer and ink
- Tape for the picture cube
- Pencils, crayons or a dry erase marker
- Optional: mini erasers or small manipulatives for an object graph
Standards for Data and Graphing
This weather graphing set supports early math standards connected to collecting data, making a graph and comparing amounts.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3: Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Kids count each column and tell which picture was rolled the most.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines
- PK4.V.E.2: Child collects data and organizes it in a graphic representation. Kids record each roll on the graph.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.PS.1.f: Organize and represent a data set (vertically or horizontally) using pictures to form a simple picture graph. Kids fill in the graph one roll at a time.
- K.PS.1.g: Analyze data represented in object graphs and picture graphs and communicate results. Kids tell which picture has the most and the fewest.
Weather Roll and Graph Set gives preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on data practice as they roll a picture cube, graph each roll and compare the results.
The picture cubes and graphs use weather pictures, like suns, clouds, rain and snow.
Kids build the picture cube, roll it and fill in a box above the picture they rolled. When the graph is done, talk about which picture was rolled the most, the least or the same number of times.
Use the color pages for a bright center or the black and white pages to save ink.
How to Use Weather Roll and Graph Set
- Print the graph and build the picture cube.
- Kids roll the cube and name the picture.
- Kids fill in one box above the matching picture.
- Keep rolling until one column reaches the top.
- Count each column and compare.
Small Group: Play or work together and talk about each step out loud.
Center: Set out the materials so kids can work on their own or with a partner.
Easy Ways to Differentiate This Activity
Every group has a mix of skills, attention and turn-taking. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Graph just 2 or 3 pictures at first.
- Count each column together.
- Use mini erasers to build an object graph.
- Name each picture before rolling.
For On-Level Practice:
- Fill in the whole graph.
- Tell which column has the most and the fewest.
- Count how many rolls in all.
- Compare two columns.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Write the number for each column.
- Ask and answer questions about the graph.
- Predict which picture will win before rolling.
- Make a tally chart of the same rolls.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Name the pictures together and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Use larger markers or pieces for kids who need them.
- Repeat the same activity across several sessions.
