Standards for Early Writing

This writing center supports early literacy standards connected to drawing and writing about a topic, printing letters and using new words.

Common Core State Standards: English Language Arts

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. Kids draw and write about the weather.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A: Print many upper- and lowercase letters. Kids trace and write weather words.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading

  • PK4.IV.A.2: Child independently draws and writes for many purposes to communicate ideas, using a variety of writing tools. Kids draw and write on each writing page.
  • PK4.II.D.3: Child consistently understands and uses new vocabulary learned through books, conversations and play. Kids learn and use weather words.

Virginia English Standards of Learning

  • K.FFW.1.B: Print capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Kids trace and copy the weather words.

Weather Writing Center gives preschool and kindergarten kids everything they need to draw, trace and write about the weather with real photo word cards and fun writing prompts.

Kids pick a weather word card, look at the real photo and use the word in their own writing. The prompts go from tracing words to finishing sentences and writing silly stories.

Set out the word cards and the word chart in a writing center so kids can find and copy the words they need. Choose the writing page that fits each child.
