Standards for Subtraction and Counting
This spring subtraction activity supports early math standards connected to joining and taking apart groups, using objects to solve problems and writing equations.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1: Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions or equations. Kids show each problem with manipulatives.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2: Solve addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. Kids use objects to find each difference.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.5: Fluently add and subtract within 5. Kids practice the same kinds of facts again and again with every roll.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics
- PK4.V.B.2: Child uses objects, pictorial models and/or a verbal word problem to represent subtracting objects from a set of 5. Kids build each number with manipulatives and join the groups.
- TEKS K.3(A): Model the action of joining to represent addition and the action of separating to represent subtraction. Kids act out each problem with objects.
- TEKS K.3(C): Explain the strategies used to solve problems involving adding and subtracting within 10 using spoken words, concrete and pictorial models and number sentences. Kids write and explain each number sentence.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.CE.1: Model and solve single-step contextual problems using addition and subtraction with whole numbers within 10. Kids model each subtraction problem with objects.
Spring Subtraction Roll and Show Mats give preschool and kindergarten kids hands-on subtraction practice as they roll dice, show each number with manipulatives and write the number sentence.
The mats have a cheerful spring theme. Kids build the first number, take some away and see how many are left.
Each mat has spaces for the numbers kids roll, a place to show the starting group and boxes to write the problem. Kids take away the second number and count what is left.
Laminate the mats or slide them into dry erase pockets so kids can use them again and again.
How to Use Spring Subtraction Roll and Show Mats
- Print and laminate the mats.
- Kids roll the dice and write the numbers at the top.
- Kids show the numbers with play dough, pom poms or counters.
- Kids take away objects and count what is left.
- Kids write the number sentence at the bottom of the mat.
Small Group: Solve a few problems together and talk about each step out loud.
Math Center: Set out the mats, dice and manipulatives so kids can practice on their own or with a partner.
Easy Ways to Differentiate These Roll and Show Mats
Every group has a mix of counting, number and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Use a die with dots so kids can count the number.
- Use dice with only 1, 2 and 3.
- Count each group together.
- Write the number sentence for the child to trace.
For On-Level Practice:
- Roll, show and write each problem.
- Say the number sentence out loud.
- Solve 5 problems in a row.
- Check the answer by counting again.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Roll dice with numerals on them, not dots.
- Solve the problem without objects first, then check.
- Write a matching story problem.
- Write the matching addition fact.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Say the numbers and the number sentence together and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Rolling play dough balls and placing pom poms build fine motor strength.
- Work on the same set of facts across several sessions.
