Standards for Rhyming

These activities support early literacy standards connected to hearing and making rhymes.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A: Recognize and produce rhyming words. Kids stack scoops that rhyme with each cone picture.

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS

  • PK4.III.B.6: Child identifies rhyming words. Kids say both words and listen for the rhyme.
  • TEKS ELA K.2(A)(i): Demonstrate phonological awareness by identifying and producing rhyming words. Kids match rhymes and think of new ones.

Virginia Standards of Learning

  • English K.FFR.2.B: Blend and segment one syllable words by onset and rime. Kids hear the same rime at the end of both words.

Rhyme Matching: Ice Cream Cone gives preschool and kindergarten kids a sweet, hands-on way to hear and match rhymes.

Each cone shows a picture. Kids say the picture name, find the scoops that rhyme and stack them on top of the cone.

Laminate the cones and scoops so they last, and store them in a cup for a summer literacy center.

How to Use Rhyme Matching: Ice Cream Cone

  1. Print, laminate and cut apart the cones and scoops.
  2. Kids pick a cone and say the picture name.
  3. Kids say each scoop picture.
  4. Kids stack the scoops that rhyme on the cone.
  5. Kids read the rhyming words out loud.

Literacy Center: Set out a few cones and their scoops.

Small Group: Say each rhyme together and clap the words.
