Standards for Addition and Making Numbers
These addition clip cards support early math standards connected to adding within 10 and finding the different ways to make a number.
Common Core State Standards: Mathematics
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.3: Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation. Kids find the different pairs that make each number.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.5: Fluently add and subtract within 5. The smaller facts build quick recall.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for Mathematics
- PK4.V.A.7: Child begins to understand that numbers 0-10 can be composed and decomposed in various ways to represent a quantity. Kids see that the same number can be made in different ways.
- TEKS K.2(I): Compose and decompose numbers up to 10 with objects and pictures. Kids break each number into two parts.
Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
- K.CE.1.d: Use objects, drawings, words or numbers to compose and decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 in multiple ways. Kids find more than one way to make each number.
Addition to 10 Clip Cards give kindergarten kids hands-on addition practice as they find every problem that makes the number on the card.
Each card features friendly kid characters and a target number. Kids read each problem, solve it and clip a clothespin on every problem that matches.
Because there are several right answers on every card, kids see that the same number can be made in many ways, like 2 + 3, 4 + 1 and 5 + 0.
Laminate the cards and use them again and again, or print the black and white version for independent practice.
How to Use Addition to 10 Clip Cards: Kids
- Print, laminate and cut the cards in half.
- Kids pick a card and read the number at the top.
- Kids solve each problem on the card.
- Kids clip a clothespin on every problem that makes the target number.
- Check the answers together.
Small Group: Solve the problems together with counters or fingers.
Math Center: Set out the cards and clothespins so kids can practice on their own.
Easy Ways to Differentiate These Clip Cards
Every group has a mix of number and fine motor skills. These simple changes keep the activity familiar while meeting each child where they are.
For Children Who Need More Support:
- Start with the cards for 1 to 5.
- Use counters or a number line to solve each problem.
- Solve one row at a time.
- Mark the correct answers with a dot marker.
For On-Level Practice:
- Use all 10 cards.
- Say each number sentence out loud.
- Count how many problems make the target number.
- Check with a partner.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Write the problems that make the number.
- Find a pattern in the answers.
- Make up a new problem for the card.
- Time how fast you can find all the matches.
For Speech, OT, ELL or Special Education Support:
- Say the numbers together and give plenty of wait time.
- Accept pointing, gestures, AAC or any communication method the child already uses.
- Pinching clothespins builds fine motor strength.
- Use the same cards across several sessions.
