Standards for Adding on a Hundreds Chart

This game supports first and second grade math standards connected to counting on, adding and number patterns to 100.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5: Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2). Kids count on from their space to add each spin.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.A.1: Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals. Kids read each number they land on.

TEKS for Mathematics

  • TEKS 1.5(A): Recite numbers forward and backward from any given number between 1 and 120. Kids count forward from where they are on the chart.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.CE.1.b: Apply strategies (e.g., the use of concrete and pictorial models, place value, properties of addition, the relationship between addition and subtraction) to determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100. Kids add each spin to their number.

Addition to 100 Hundreds Chart: Penguin Theme gives first and second grade kids a simple game for adding and counting on all the way to 100.

Kids put a marker on 1, spin the spinner and add that number to move along the penguin hundreds chart. They keep spinning and adding until they reach 100.

Kids can say each addition fact out loud, like “24 plus 6 is 30,” and check it on the chart. Play with a partner and race to 100.
