  • Paper cutter or scissors

Standards for Double Digit Addition

These puzzles support second grade math standards connected to adding two-digit numbers.

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Kids add each two-digit problem.

TEKS for Mathematics

  • TEKS 2.4(B): Add up to four two-digit numbers and subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations. Kids add the tens and ones to solve each puzzle.

Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning

  • 2.CE.1.b: Apply strategies (e.g., the use of concrete and pictorial models, place value, properties of addition, the relationship between addition and subtraction) to determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100. Kids find each sum.

Addition Puzzles Double-Digits: Spider Theme give first and second grade kids hands-on practice adding two-digit numbers without regrouping.

Kids solve the addition problem on each spider piece, then find the web piece with the sum. The pieces only fit together when the answer is right.

The puzzle shape makes the cards self-checking, so kids can work on their own in a math center.

How to Use Addition Puzzles Double-Digits: Spider Theme

  1. Print, laminate and cut apart the puzzles.
  2. Mix up the pieces.
  3. Kids pick a spider piece and solve the problem.
  4. Kids find the web piece with the sum and fit the pieces together.

Math Center: Set out the puzzles for independent practice.

Small Group: Solve a few puzzles together with base ten blocks.
