Standards for Beginning Sounds and Letter-Sound Correspondence
These BINGO games support early literacy standards connected to hearing beginning sounds, matching sounds to letters and taking turns in a group.
Common Core State Standards: English Language Arts
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.A: Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences. Kids match each beginning sound to its letter.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. Kids listen and take turns.
Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading
- PK4.III.C.2: Child recognizes at least 20 distinct letter-sound correspondences. Kids match letters and beginning sounds.
- PK4.III.B.7: Child identifies alliterative words with pictorial support. Kids listen for pictures that start with the same sound.
Virginia English Standards of Learning
- K.FFR.2.C: Isolate the initial, medial and final sounds in three phoneme words. Kids listen for the first sound of each picture.
- K.FFR.3.B: Identify common letter-sound correspondences. Kids cover the letter or picture that matches the sound.
Beginning Sounds BINGO Games give preschool and kindergarten kids a fun whole-group way to listen for first sounds and match them to letters.
Play with the letter mats by calling out a picture, or with the picture mats by calling out a letter. Either way, kids listen for the beginning sound and cover a match.
With 25 different mats in each level, a whole class can play at once. The game builds listening skills, letter knowledge and group play skills in one quick activity.
How to Play Beginning Sounds BINGO
- Print the mats and cards and cut apart the picture and letter cards.
- Give each player a mat and markers.
- Call a picture or a letter.
- Players listen for the sound and cover a match on their mat.
- The first player to cover a row says “BINGO!”
Circle Time: Play with the whole class and let kids take turns as the caller.
Small Group: Stop after each call and say the sound together.
Easy Ways to Differentiate This BINGO Game
